Fur trading was one of the initial businesses that propelled the economy of this state. Minnesota has also proved to be a pioneer in the region of the production of ethanol as fuel. Sales tax is imposed at a rate slightly above six percent. But certain important commodities like motor fuel are exempted. A tax called the Use Tax is imposed on objects bought outside Minnesota but used within the state.

At the last estimates made, Minnesota had a population in excess of five million. And the good transport facilities available are one of the major reasons behind this exponential increase in the population of the state.
